True Detective: The Next Big Thing

Texas Tornado

If you are anything like myself, then you are probably sick and tired of all of the crappy crime drama’s that pollute our television screens every night–not to mention the crap they tried to call a series finale on Dexter! Oh man, Mikey Disliked That!

It appears, however, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel in a genre that has lacked originality over the last couple of years. HBO has brought us a true gem with True Detective, a suspenseful murder mystery that takes place in two different time periods (1995 and 2012). I won’t say more than that because this is simply a show I refuse to spoil for anyone. The superb acting, the creepy southern Texas setting and the ‘serial killer on the loose’ atmosphere completely take you in from the opening minutes. But viewers be warned: this is not a show that you can get up to take a bathroom break. The writing is superb (not to mention that it stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as the leads which is unprecedented for a TV show IMO) but almost every line seems to serve a purpose (plus Woody and Matty play their characters to perfection, you don’t want to miss this, folks!)

Not only that, my understanding is that the plan for this show is very similar to American Horror Story in the sense that it will reset after each season (and HBO you better renew this show–after 1 episode, I can already tell it is going to be a brilliant 8 episodes of quality, original storytelling). This should allow the series to cast a variety of actors and actresses in the future, much like Woody and Matt, and I have to admit the story and characters are better for it (anyone who has seen Season 1 of Under the Dome and read my reviews will know that quality acting can sometimes be overlooked).

If you haven’t seen this show yet, I definitely recommend checking it out as SOON as you possibly can. Oh, and the Intro Sequence was wicked awesome as well, check it out:
